Oldie but Goodie - Nethack

Hallo, new writer Louise here. I’d like to begin my first post with one of my favorites: NetHack. For the uninitiated, Nethack can be thought of as Diablo’s great grandfather — it’s a dungeon crawler in its purest sense. No fancy graphics (the bare bones version is composed of ASCII characters), no epic soundtrack (or sound at all). Just lots of dungeon crawling and weird loot.

Don’t let the slight learning curve scare you. The first time I played, I died within five minutes from choking on a bit of honey because I pressed the wrong key and couldn’t get my character to stop eating it. Once you get the controls down (or reset them to your liking) and learn not to eat everything you pick up, you might just start to enjoy yourself in the game. Just don’t get discouraged the first time you die. I’ve been playing for years and haven’t once beat the game (you have to ascend with the amulet).

The best part about Nethack: the many many creative ways you can die.
